The historical town of the district of Geyzing subdivision which further lies in the north eastern state of India, Sikkim, Yuksom stands as the former capital of the state, which was establishe in the year 1642 AD Phuntsog Namgyal, who was considered as the first Chogyal, the temporal and the religious king of the state, Sikkim.
It is also considered as the coronation site of the former monarch of Sikkim and is also known as the “Throne of Norbugang”. Yuksom is situated in a close proximity to the Norbugang Chorten near the Norbugang throne, which stands as the place where Namgyal was crowned.
The literal meaning of the name of the town is the “meeting place of the three learned monks”, who believed to have visited from Tibet and established the Nyingmapa order of Tibetan Buddhism, here in the city. The tourist attractions of the place are Demazong, which is considered as the sacred landscape and its literal meaning is valley of rice. Other attractions are from the religious genre and are believed to have been blessed by Guru Padmasambhava, which are considered to be the four parts of the human body and the term Yuksom is symbolically defined as the third eye.
Yuksom is also considered as the opening for the Khangchendzonga National Park. It also offers opportunity for the trekkers and the mountaineers with its courses that are organized by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. Another attraction which is hosted by the place isd a placid lake called as the Kathok Lake.
The nearest airport is at Bagdogra in North Bengal, which is just at a distance of 124 km from Gangtok, Sikkims capital. The nearest railway stations are at Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri, 114 km and 126 km respectively, from the state capital Gangtok. The state capital, Gangtok is well connected by road with the major cities of the country such as Calcutta (721 km), Darjeeling (139 km), Guwahati (589 km) and Patna (584 km).
