Wagha Border

Wagha Border

Wagah Border is the only road border crossing between India and Pakistan that lies on the grand truck road 28kms away near Amritsar city of Punjab state in India. The place was named as Wagah on the name of a village Wahga in Pakistan. The village was divided by independence in 1947. Today, the eastern half of the village remains in the Republic of India while the western half is in Pakistan. The border hosts a retreat ceremony called ‘lowering of the flags’, every evening since 1959. During the ceremony, Border Security Force (B.S.F) of India and the Pakistan Rangers soldiers perform energetic parade. The ceremony is conducted before sunsets at Wagah border and it lasts for 40 to 45 minutes. The ceremony ends with a handshake between the soldiers of both the countries.
