Vijayawada stands as the biggest city in the district of Krishna District and also claims to be the third largest city in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, after Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam. The city is sprawled over an area of around 261.88 sq km. The city stands on the northern bank of the river Krishna. The city also has witnessed the reigns of many rulers which includes the Gajapathis of Orissa, Eastern Chalukyas and the great ruler Krishna Deva Raya.


The literal meaning of the name is “Land of Victory” is derived from the presiding deity, Kanaka Durga, also known by a name called Vijaya. And as per the legend it is believed that Goddess Durga rested here after destroying the demon and she stood with victory and thereafter was called with a name Vijaya. Historically, the city is popularly known as by a name Bezawada.


While the other legend states that the name of the city has been derived from the time when Lord Shiva blessed Arjuna on the Indrakiladri Hills. As per the legends in Vishnu Puranam, King Madhava Varma, the ancestor of Poosapati Kings, constructed the kingdom of Vijayawada. It is said that he was he only built the temple of Kanaka Durga which is situated in Indrakiladri. The city is also considered as an important religious place for Hindus and Buddhists.


After the construction of three irrigation canals Ryves, Eluru and Bandar along with a barrage in the year 1855 and the railway bridge over the Krishna River in the year 1892, the city witnessed a turning point in its fate with its enormous growth in the very century and soon after it came to be known as an important trade centre since the pre independence era.


Today, the city has many things to boast about as it claims to the commercial capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh, along with that the city also owns the second largest railway junction in the country. According to McKinsey Quarterly, the city of Vijayawada is the ‘Global City of Future’ and stands with 159th position as the fastest developing city in the world.
