Vembanad Lake is one of the largest lakes in India and is considered as the Indias largest and the longest lake, also accredited as the largest lake in the state of Kerala. The lake is bordered by the districts of of Allepey, Kottayam and Ernakulam.


The lake is popular for its unique feature that it is divided into two parts by the Thannermukkom salt water barrier, which make a part of the lake salty and the other part with fresh water from the river drains into the lake.


To the localities the lake is known with different names such as Punnamada Lake in Kuttanad, Kochi Lake in Kochi. There is also a popular event conducted on this lake called as the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, gathering huge masses.
