Vautha Mela

Vautha Mela

Vautha Mela is the famous festival of western Indian state of Gujarat in India. The fair is held at Vautha, the meeting point of two most important rivers i.e. Sabarmati and the Vatrak. The Mela site stretches in the area of 3 square miles (7.8 km2). It is said that Kartik swami or kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva visited the place. That is why the fair is held during kartika poornima which is the full moon night of the kartik month (November month of English calendar). The place where Vautha Mela is organized is also recognised as Saptasangam, the meeting point of seven rivers. Siddhanath is the famous Shiva temple in the region where people come to worship during the festival.

The Vautha Mela has its great religious and economical significance for the people in Gujarat.  Being religious, the place is related with kartikeya and is the land of seven sages. Economically, the fair is the only major animal trading fair in Gujarat other than the famous camel fair at Pushkar in Rajasthan. Only donkeys are traded at Vautha Mela. Farmers, labourers and people belonging to several castes from all over the country together visit an enjoy celebrating this amazing fair.
