Vasco Da Gama is often called as Vasco as its pet name and also stands to be the largest city in the western state of India, Goa. The city is positioned on the narrow strip of the Marmagoa Peninsula. The city of Vasco has the largest population among all the cities of the state of Goa, which is estimated over than 100,000 and is also the headquarters of the Mormugao Taluka.


The city took its name from the Portuguese explorer, Vasco Da Gama. The city is situated just at a distance of 29 km from the state capital, Panaji and also stands as one of the busiest ports that falls on the west coast of the Indian sub continent and it was the reason for it being acquired by the Portuguese in 1543. At present, the city of Vasco Da Gama is a busy shipping port where huge container vessels come to deposit raw materials and other items like ores and minerals to the countries Japan and Korea. As per the legend, in the past, the attempts were made to replace the name of the city with Sambhajinagar.

Vasco Da Gama by Road:  Vasco has good road connectivity to major cities of Goa. The Interstate Kadamba Bus Terminus, 3 km east of the town centre, lies on the National Highway 17A, connecting the city to the rest of the country.
