Umiam Lake

Umiam Lake lies in the north region of Shillong in the state of Meghalaya. It is a reservoir of Shillong, placed in the hills of Shillong just at a distance of about 15 km. It was created by blocking the Umiam River in the initial rears of 1960. The main area of the lake and dam is sprawled over 220 square km. It is encircled by Khasi hills and is a man-made water body. Umiam Lake is also called as Barapani (Big Water) is sprawled over an area of 10 sq km, and is surrounded with a massive hydro-electric dam has been constructed across the Umiam river stream.


The State authorities and the Meghalaya Tourism Department formed the lake as a tourist spot. The Lake is one of the best Water Sport in the state and offers many adventure facilities to the tourists such as kayaking, water scooting and boating. When visiting the lake definitely have a spectacular ride of the floating restaurant with ferryboat services. The very attraction also features a garden, known as Lum Nehru Park along with the water sports complex.
