A jaunt from Kanyakumari to Udayagiri Fort is exhilarating and adventurous. Kanyakumari and Udaygiri fort stands among the important tourists destinations in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
The popular Udaygiri fort is stationed just a 14 km drive from Nagercoil in the district of Kanyakumari. The fort is located on the Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil National highway at Puliyoorkurichi and is sprawled over 90 acres of land on a separate hill having an altitude of 260 ft.
The fort was an important military quarters of the Travancore rulers, whilst Padmanabhapuram was the capital. The premises of the fort used to be the place for an old foundry used for casting guns. The fort was formed out of massive granite blocks around an isolated hillock having height of 260 ft. The fort was then restored in about 1600 AD. It is believed that the King Raja Chola of the Chola Dynasty ruined and shattered the fort.
The fort was rebuilt during the rule of Marthanda Varma, Venad King in about 1741 to 44 with the direction of Eustachius De Lannoy, a flemish naval commander of the Dutch East India Company, who later became the Chief of the Travancore Army.
There is an underground tunnel within the fort as discovered by the Department of Archaeology. The fort is converted into a bio-diversity park by the Tamil Nadu forest department, showcasing the sites of historical importance, such as De Lannoys tomb. The neighboring areas of the fort are an abode to deer, ducks, birds and over 100 varieties of trees.
