Tirupur is considered as one of the textile towns lying in the district of Tirupur, is the state of Tamil Nadu. The city is situated on the banks of Noyyal River, and is also the administrative headquarters of the Tirupur district.
It is an ancient town, earlier known by the name of ‘Viradapuram’ or ‘Dharapuram’. As per the legends, Tirupur acquired its name from the incident – ‘Thiruppu’ meaning turn and ‘oor’ meaning place. Many artifacts like coins, old pottery items, etc. have been exhumed from the city.
Tirupur also stands as a part of the Chola Dynasty which is evident from the earliest Chola stone carvings on Kanchi Maanadhi, the Noyyal River and its fertile sand depositions. According to these carvings Tirupur was a well sought-after fertile land. Also the ancient Chellandi Amman Temple which is stationed on the river banks of the Noyyal displays the Chola style architecture. Later, Tirupur became a part of the Kongu region which witnessed the establishment and expansion of Vijayanagara Power.
Tirupur, is called by several names such as ‘the Manchester of South India’, ‘Dollar City’, ‘Knit City’, ‘Cotton City’ and ‘History Centre’. Tirupur came into limelight as the knitwear capital of India in just three decades.
