Covering just 25 sq. km of area, Thattekad bird sanctuary was the first bird sanctuary in Kerala, the southern state of India. It is situated 60 km north-east of Kochi and is also called as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. According to Salim Ali, one of the best known ornithologists described this sanctuary as the richest bird habitat on peninsular India. The region is an evergreen low-land forest located between the branches of Periyar River, the longest river in Kerala.
