The 19th century mosque, Taj-ul-Masjid stands as the magnificent structure in the state capital, Bhopal, lying in the central state of India, Madhya Pradesh. The edifice is one of the most elegant of its kind in the state capital, erecting at a considerable height, with a pink façade.
The name of the monument literally defines as the The Crown of Mosques. Exactly like its name, Taj-ul-Masjid is one of the largest mosques in India and one of the most important pilgrims for the Muslims in India. The building offers remarkable sights and is crowned with two colossal white-domed minarets.
The construction of the edifice was continued by her daughter Sultan Jahan Begum, till her existence. Due to lack of finances and changing reigns took quite a long time nd laid out its foundation after the War of Revolt 1857. The construction resumed again in 1971by Allama Imran Khan Nadwi Azhari of Bhopal, who completed the shrine in 1985. The monument came out as a beautifully adorned mosque in India.
The Taj-ul-Masjid of Bhopal now serves for the religious purpose as well as a madrasa or a Islamic school. The 3 day Ijtima conglomeration attracts huge number of people every year from all corners of the country.
The Taj-ul-Masjid is build around a massive court and has a big reservoir in the centre. The gateway is beautifully carved out and is double storeyed with four archways and nine cusped manifold openings that open in main prayer hall of the impressive Masjid.
The Quibla wall of the prayer hall is has been decorated with the eleven arches. The massive hall houses the lofty pillars, which are profoundly patterned with intricate designs and the concluded part is comprised of twenty seven ceilings. In the hall, there are octagonal mirrors, which are elevating to a height of eighteen storeys, stands as an attraction in itself.
The other attractions in the area is Dhai Seedi Ki Masjid and the literal meaning of the name of the mosque is “The Mosque of Two and a Half Steps”, which stands as one of the smallest mosques in Asia, is erected just opposite to the Taj-ul-Masajid.
