St. Philomenas Church

St. Philomenas Church has been created out in the gothic form of architecture and is one of the oldest and largest churches of the continent of Asia. This cathedral was constructed in order to honor St. Philomena in the Indian district of Mysore. The church was constructed out in the year 1956 in neo gothic style of architecture and has been inspired by a well known basilica of Germany known as Cologne Cathedral. The church was designed by a French man named Daly.


The church stands on the spot where there was an old church that was built by Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar III stood. It is believed that in 1926, Thamboo Chetty, who was the secretary of the then Maharaja of Mysore, Nalvadi Ktishnaraja wodeyar, got a relic of the saint Peter Pisani, who was delegated from Eastern Indies. Then on October 28 in the year 1933, the Maharaja of Mysore laid a foundation of the church. The structure of the church got completed in the supervision of Bishop Rene Fuga. The relic of St, Philomena, which was the reason of the foundation of the church is preserved and kept in a catacomb, standing below the main altar. It is estimated that the church retains the legacy which dates back to 200 years ago.


The church stands as one of the major landmark in the city of Bangalore and renders a mesmerizing site in the evening that you just cannot afford to miss on your visit to the city. One of the majestic churches of the country has twin spires which are elevated to a length of 175 ft high; soaring in the sky as can be seen from miles away, making a distinctive landmark of the city.


The church holds majestic space inside it as the main hall of the cathedral can host up to 800 people and is exquisitely crafted with ornaments in its exterior along with beautiful stained glass windows portraying scenes from the birth of Christ, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection and the Ascension of Christ.


In the church, Holy Mass is performed on a regular basis in Kannada, Tamil and English at the table in the sanctum. At the back of the table there is an exquisite marble altar on which the statue of Saint Philomena is positioned. The church is opened for the visitors from 8 o ‘clock in the morning till 6 o ‘clock in the evening.
