The city of South Dumdum is a municipality, which lies in the district of the North 24 Parganas, forming a part of the north eastern Indian state of West Bengal. The region falls under the Kolkata Metropolitan Region. The city is erected at an altitude of about 12 m above the sea level.


This city of Dumdum lies in the north western part of the state West Bengal and enjoys its neighborhood with the state capital, Kolkata. It stands in the region of of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, which was once known as Dum Dum Airport.


The city is also known for providing transport facilities in the country. It also manufactures products for the Indian Armed Force and is a land base for the domestic as well as the foreign tourists. Dum Dum region is about 10 km from the city centre which is taken to be Esplanade, Kolkata. The localities that are situated in its vicinity are Nager Bazar, Motijheel, Ghughu Danga, private road, chatakal, Jawpur, Rajbari and Lal Bagan. The city blessed with beauty experiences three types of climate such as the summers, winters and monsoons. Here summers are quite hot, especially during the day time as nights are cool and pleasant. Winters start here in the month of November till February which is quite cold, dropping the temperature of the city to 2 degree Celsius. Monsoons arrive in the month of June till September and bring heavy showers in the city.

South Dumdum by Air: The Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at Kolkata Airport is located in the fringes of Dum Dum, which connects the city to the rest of the world.


South Dumdum by Rail: The city has a railhead which runs on Sealdah-Ranaghat Line. The trains run in all the parts of the state.


South Dumdum by Road: The city has an organized way of roadway network and it is connected with NH 34, which starts from Dalkhola and ends at Dum Dum. There are two roads that passes through the city and these are the leisure road and the Dumdum road.
