Solapur

Solapur is one of the largest cities in the Indian state of Maharashtra, which serves both as a city and a district. Solapur along with three other districts namely Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur form the South Western part of the state of Maharashtra. The city is located in a close proximity to the borders of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and also stands as an ancient place with historical and religious importance with Shri Siddharameshwar as its chief deity.

Solapur has undergone through several dynasties ruled like Chalukyas, Andhrabhratyas, Yadavas, Rashtrkutas and Bahamanias. The city Solapur took its name by combining the two words “Sola” and “Pur”, where “Sola” means sixteen and “Pur” means village. This is relevant since Solapur is considered to include sixteen villages. The city of Solapur has formed itself as a commercial hub for the production of cotton and other agricultural materials. Solapur stands as one of the major cities of Maharashtra and also is an important place of Jains. The city is also popular for hosting many historical monuments.
