Se Cathedral is a well known basilica and is considered as one of the largest churches in Asia. The main altar of the church is dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria. It is also recognized as the oldest and the most renowned religious monuments in the Indian state of Goa. The church also is a revered place of Archdiocese of Goa.
Se Cathedral also enjoys the honor of being enlisted as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The church was commissioned by the Portuguese Viceroy Redondo to be “a grandiose church worthy of the wealth, power and fame of the Portuguese who dominated the seas from the Atlantic to the Pacific”.
Today, the church is the biggest of its kind in Portugal, even though it was weighed down by several problems for lack of funds and Portugals temporary loss of independence to Spain. It took eighty years in its construction and was consecrated only in 1640.
25th November 1510, happened to be the feast day of St. Catherine, to whom the church was desiccated. The local population in the area has a belief that at the church, there happen miracles and the cross is increasing in its size.
Previously, Se Cathedral also had the sacred relics of St. Francis Xavier, which were permitted to show the public.
The best time to visit the church is from October till March as the climate is quite pleasant. The visiting timings of the cathedral is from 7:30am till 6:00pm.
