Satpura National Park is positioned in the district of Hoshangabad, which lies in the heart of India, Madhya Pradesh. The national park took its name from the famous Satpura hill ranges, also known as the Mahadeo hills. The national park is sprawled over an area of about 524 sq km, which adjoins Panchmarchi Biosphere Reserve, which includes Bori Wildlife Santuary to its south-west and Panhmarhi wildlife sanctuary to its north-east. Panchmarhi Sanctuaries renders Satpura National Park an area of about 1,427 sq km, with a central highland. The national park was established in 1981.


The national park stands at an elevation, which ranges between 320 to 1352 m and is nestled in the midst of lofty sandstone mountains, narrow ravines, cascading waterfalls, streams and lush green forests near the Mahadev hills, lies in the Pachmarhi plateau. The area possesses the two exceptional species of trees – the Sal and the teak along with a diverse variety of ferns, mango trees, butterflies and birds.


The topography of the national park is extremely rough and rocky. It is comprised all comprised of sandstone peaks, narrow gorges, ravines and dense forests. The peak known as Dhoopgarh peak ranges its height to about 1,400 m and the leveled plains of Churna.


Satpura National Park with its unique ecosystem has a rich biodiversity. The fauna that is found here includes black buck, fox, porcupine, flying squirrel, mouse deer, Indian giant squirrel, tiger, leopard, sambar, chital, Bhedki, nilgai, four-horned antelope, chinkara, bison (gour), wild boar, wild dog, bear, etc.


The region also has a rich avifauna and the common birds that can be found here are Hornbills and peafowl.


The flora consists of mainly Phyllanthus emblica, mahua, bel, bamboo, Sal, teak, tendu and grasses and medicinal plants.


The best time to visit the place is in the months of November till March. The nearest airport is in Bhopal and the nearest railhead is at Pipariya, also the park is connected through NH69 to Hoshangabad, state road to Panchmarhi via Pipariya.
