Republic Day is the national festival celebrated on 26th January every year. On this day the constitution of India came into force in the year 1950. It is one of the three national holidays celebrated by the whole nation. The day is celebrated to honor the declaration of Independence of 1930.


The day is celebrated with the parade that takes place in the national capital at the Rajpath before the President of India (currently Pranab Mukherjee). The day is also celebrated t various other states of India where the where the Governor of the state unfurls the national flag. In case the governor of the state is not available then the chief minister of the state does the honor of unfurling the Indian flag.


The major highlight of the day is the grand parade that held in New Delhi. The event starts with the India’s prime minister laying garland at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate, remembering the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for their country. Moving ahead, the India’s president takes the military salute during the parade. A foreign head of state is the presidents chief guest on Republic Day. Awards and medals of bravery are given to the people from the armed forces and civilians for the bravery they have shown in critical circumstances.


The performances at the republic day parade include the one done by the three armed forces of India i.e. Military and Navy. School children also come to perform at the event. The most fascinating amongst all are the ‘Jhakis’ of the different states of India embracing the different tradition and culture of states.
