Chamba is known by a name of temple town and of course, you can witness a range of other tourist attractions on your tour to Chamba. The Bhuri museum, Akhand Chandi palace and the Rang Mahal are some the famous places that counts as the best tourist destinations in Chamba. The Singh rulers build all the palaces and the museums in Chamba.
Rang Mahal is situated in Suraj Mohalla, attracting its visitors, basically for its past record and of course its exquisiteness. Traditionally speaking, King Ummed Singh placed down the foundation of the palace, during middle year of the eighteenth century (1748-1764). The palace is also known by the phrase “Painted Palace”, for its colorful structure.
Later, the king of the same dynasty, Raj Sri Singh with others renovated the brick palace in 1860. The aim behind the composition of Rang Mahal, was to develop a warehouse for the royal grain and treasure, along with that it also served as the domicile to the king .
The architecture of Rang Mahal displays an excellent combination of Mughal and British styles. There were some more additions and amendment that were made by Jit Singh and Charat Singh, which added the beauty of Rang Mahal. Its beauty is what soothes and relax the eyes of the viewers. The palace was all-bejeweled with wall paintings and cravings. Here you would find the most exquisite collection of Pahadi paintings.
The paintings executed the stories of lord Krishna and his adventures. The doors of the palace are all carved ones, giving the palace a majestic look. These paintings and doors are now displayed at the Bhuri museum and some of them are brought to Delhi. The fort was used as women domicile till 1947 but at present, it houses a college.
One the residence of the royal blood, today Rang Mahal houses the Himachal emporium. The rooms are now being used as workshops of the displayed crafted items for tourist, who can purchase on their visit to the Rang Mahal. These items include chappals, silk rumals, shoes.
The tourists can visit the Rang Mahal between 10 am to 1.00 pm and 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm, from Mondays to Saturdays. The tourists can also visit the emporium and it is something not to be missed.
