Another legend describes this as the place as where Maharaja Marthanda Varma was given protection from his enemies by the powerful merchant, Moosa Marikkar. It is said that the picturesque sight of red kovala flowers floating in the Nayyar River led the Maharaja to describe the river as pu (flower) ar (river) or the river of flowers.
Located a coastal area Poovar is also known as a fishing village having its major attractions such as beach and its backwaters. The village is also famous for its martial art form. It is believed that Poovar once used to be called as “Poo-aar”, which means a ‘stream of flowers’ as when splitting the term we get pu meaning flower and aar meaning river. The place was given this name by the king of Travancore- Marthanda Varma, who was carried away with the beauty of the place.
The red kovala flowers flowing and floating in the waters of the river Neyyar River makes the site all the more attractive. The place is located just close to the dock of Vizhinjam and it is an arrangement of estuaries, lakes, deltas, canals and the delta of 44 rivers merges into the Arabian Sea. Kovalam Beach is 18 km from Poovar. Also Poovar is located at a distance of just 38km from the capital city and is at just fifteen-minute boat ride distance.
