Periyar National Park (PNP) is sprawled over an area of 925sq km. the park was honored with a status of a national park in 1982. It is a protected area in the districts of Idukki and Pathanamthitta of the state of Kerala. The park is especially noticed as an elephant reserve and a tiger reserve.


The park is often called as the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and is placed on the high hills of Cardamom and Pandalam in the southern side of the Western Ghats, running along with the border of the state called Tamil Nadu. The park is at just a distance of about 4 km from Kumily.


In Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary the view of boat cruiser and elephant ride is commonly found. This park houses 171 grass species, 1695 flowering plants and 143 orchid’s species. Besides elephants, tigers and Tahrs, bison, bear, sambhar, wild oxen, spotted dear, wild boar, wild dog, squirrels, barking dear and mouse deer. There are more than 260 species of birds. Here you can spot various species of animals as well such as elephants, leopards, tigers and other animals along with over It includes Nilgiri wood pigeon, blue-winged parakeet, white-bellied tree pie, flycatchers and laughing thrushes.


Due to its location, the park sets a picturesque backdrop; all displaying the nature’s beauty making it a perfect place to spend time relax and rejuvenate. The park is located on the border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, making it an ideal spot for vacation as the place is surrounded with some pilgrimage centers, tea factories, forest waterfalls and spice plantations.
