The hill city of Pachmarhi nestles in the lap of the Satpura Hills is positioned on a secluded plateau in the Mahadeo hills of the Satpura range in the south eastern corner of the Hoshangabad district. The hill city is officially known as Pachmarhi Cantonment, the hill resort is rested at an elevation of about 1,078 ft, above the sea level.


This saucer shaped hill station is sprawled over an area of about 59.01 sq km and is widely known as “Satpura ki Rani”, the queen of Satpura. The highest point in the central India region and the Vindhya and Satpura range is Dhupgarh, which is erected at an altitude of about 1,350 m.


The history of Pachmarhi can be traced from the year 1857, as that was the time when Captain James Forsyth of the Bengal Lance founded this gorgeous province which is snowed under natural beauty. Soon after, the place became a hill resort and medical place for the British people, who used to live in the central part of India.


It is believed that the hill city took its name from the Pandava Caves and when split the name, it forms ‘Panch’, meaning five and ‘Marhi’ meaning caves. The place is called off as Panchmarhi or Panchmadhi by the local people.


The hill station in Madhya Pradesh, Pachmarhi is a long stretched flat terrain and is all flanked by rocky hills, woody forests and deep canyons. The backdrop of the place is comprised of surging hills, charming cascades along with massive spread lush vegetation, grabbing the eyeballs of the visitors. The spot also renders an incredible sight of the sunrise and sunset which sets in at the horizon.


It is most luxuriant gem of the state revealing nature at its best and also holds a great archeological value.
