The lake is positioned in Ooty in the district of Nilgiris of the state of Tamil Nadu. The lake is sprawled over an area of 65 acres. There is also a boat house, which is situated next to the lake, providing boating facilities. The lake stands as the major tourist attractions in the town.


It is an artificial lake built by John Sullivan, in the year 1824. The lake was made by the waters, flowed down from the mountain streams. It was initially intended to be used for fishing with the ferries used to travel on the water of the lake. The Lake in Udhagamandalam, commonly known as Ooty Lake, is nestled in the heart of Ooty, forms a silhouette of the alphabet L in its configuration. In the “Queen of the Hills” this lake popularly recognized with the name of its city is the best place for boating. At present the size of the lake has been contracted for here the space of the lake has been shared with the city’s bus stand, race course and the lake park. The lake is bordered by the groves of Eucalyptus trees with a railway line running along one shore. Every year, in the month of May, boat races and boat shows are held for two days.The means of conveyance includes horses and ponies and the sport horse ride is the favorite one for anyone visiting the place.
