The Nallamalas also called as the Nallamalla Range, which literally defines as the Black Hills, forms a part of the Eastern Ghats which is sprawled over Kurnool, Mahabubnagar, Guntur, Prakasam and Kadapa districts of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. This hill range is rested forming a pattern of North-South, and is stretched on a parallel line of the Coast of Coromandel and for about 430 km and are nestled in the midst of two rivers Pennar and Krishna.
In its northern side the hill range is flanked by the flat Palnadu basin while in its southern side, it is bordered with the Tirupati hills. These hill ranges dates back to the ancient times and has undergone through weather erosions.
Today, the hill range is erected at an elevation of about 520 m, which touches BhairaniKonda at 1100 m and GundlaBrahmeswara at 1048 m. These peaks are are positioned at the north west direction to that of Cumbum town.There are also many other peaks above 800 m. There are other peaks exceeding the height of 800 m. It is a series of 20,000 ft thick rocks which are of the Kadapa System which consists of the Nallamala ranges.
There are some primary Quartzite rocks, which are placed in an irregular and slaty arrangement. The rocks consist of sandstone as well and are known as soft rocks, which makes it an attractive spot to visit and is favorite tourist attraction among the nature lovers and the adventure seekers. It is believed that these rocks which stand here are the oldest rocks in the world. As per the legends, these rocks were formed by the volcanic eruptions that were occurred million years ago. It is believed that the Nallamala range originated around 2nd century A.D.
The places to visit in this hill city are Srisailam and Cumbum Lake. The best time to visit the place are in the months from October to February. The nearest railhead is the Markapur, which is located on the Guntur-Hubli line. The hills can also be reached by air via Hyderabad airport as it is the nearest airport to this hill range. The city also has a good roadway network which connects it to the major cities of the country.
