Nahargarh Fort is erected on the rim of the Aravalli Hills, makes a way to miss the pink city of Jaipur, the state capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan. The fort of Nahargarh gives a breath taking bird’s eye view of the beautiful pink city. The fort claims to be the formers fort among the three forts that were built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh 2, which was erected in the year 1734 and extended in 1868. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, the founder of the Nahargarh Fort is also considered to be as the founder of the pink city, Jaipur.
In conjunction with the other two major forts of the town, Amber Fort and Jaigarh Fort, Nahargarh once stood as the strong defense ring of the city. It is believed that the original name of the fort is Sudarshangarh, and later on changed its name as Nahargarh, which literally means as the abode of tigers. There is this popular belief that Nahar here, stands for Nahar Singh Bhomia, whose spirit preoccupied the place and hindered in the process of construction of the fort. To pacify the spirit of Nahar Singh, a temple complex was erected within the boundaries of the fort and thus known to be referred by his name.
The walls of the fort are well extended over the hills which are flanked around the fort, forming fortifications, which adjoins the fort to the Jaigarh Fort. The fort has never been conquered in its entire history, till date but has witnessed some of the historical events in the past history.
The fort, popularly known as the Tiger Fort can be reached as is just at a walking distance from the fort. There, on top of the hill, there nestles a beautiful lake which is called as Man Sagar Lake, provides a welcoming view to its spectators. At just the center point of the lake, there is a duck blind, which is a shelter for screening duck hunters, has been constructed by Raja Jai Singh 2 for his shooting parties.
The main attraction of the Nahargarh Fort is the Madhavendra Bhavan which stood as the summer retreat of the royal family. The edifice was constructed by Sawai Ram Singh II during the period of 1880s and this building has 12 similar suites for the queens.
Another attraction for the tourists is the Durg cafeteria, which is located just above the entrance offering refreshment to the tourists. The place is sort of a picnic spot for the tourists, along with that there is Padao restaurant, which issituated in the western side of the fort and is open only in the evenings.
This royal heritage in the city also has some of the attractions which are situated in the nearby region such as Jnatar Mantar, which is just at a distance of about 2.7 km from the fort. Other places situated in its vicinity are the City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Jalmahal, Jaigarh Fort and Amer Fort.
