More commonly known as Mollem National Park, is also recognized as Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary. This conserved area is located in quaint and nondescript village called Mollem, which has attained global status as one of the most popular destinations in the Indian state of Goa.
The national park is sprawled over an area of about 240 sq km, which forms a part of the Western Ghatsof South India in Sanguem Taluk, Goa and touches the eastern borders of the state of Karnataka. Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary stands as one of the four biggest wildlife sanctuaries in the state and was formerly known as the Mollem Game Sanctuary.
The park was honored with a status of a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1969 and was renamed as Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary. The core area of the sanctuary is 107 square km and was declared as the Mollem Ntional Park in 1978. Mollem National Park is an abode of a rich and endangered wildlife species. Mollem National Park houses to quite a large number of animals, birds and plants which are otherwise on the verge of extinction. This national park is truly a nature’s paradise.
The flora in the park includes evergreen forests, west coast tropical evergreen forests and moist deciduous forests. Terminalia, xylia, dalbergia, and lagerstroemia are some of the species in Mollem National Park. The fauna which can be seen in and around the park are gaur, leopards, chital, mouse deer, barking deer, wild boar, Indian porcupine, wild dogs, leopard cat, sambar deer, bonnet macaque, common langur, jungle cat, civet, flying squirrels, Malabar giant squirrel, pangolin, and the slender loris. Poisonous snakes such as king cobras, pythons, kraits, and vipers etc. While the avifauna include paradise flycatcher, Indian great black woodpecker, emerald dove, Malabar pied hornbill, great Indian hornbill, grey jungle fowl, fairy bluebird, drongo, wag tails, shrikes, barbets, kingfishers etc. It has around 200 avian species.
The best Season to Visit Mollem National Park is in the months from October to March and the visiting timings of the national park are between 8 am and 5 pm. Mollem National Park is situated in the heart of Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, which is just at a distance of about 65 km from Panaji, in Sanguem Taluka. The nearest airport at Dabolim is just at a distance of about 80 km from Mollem National Park. Colem railway station stands as the nearest railhead, which is just 6 km from Mollem National Park. Regular buses to the park are available at the station. This is to give you an additional information that there is entry fee to enter into Mollem National Park and for adult it charges Rs 20 and for children it Charges Rs 5 and extra charges for personal vehicle and camera.
