Mir Alam Tank Lake

Mir Alam Tank Lake

Mir Alam Tank is a large lake in the city of Hyderabad, which has been erected adjacent to Nehru Zoological Park that lies on the Hyderabad-Bangalore Highway. This lake has been a source of drinking water for over 125 years, for the people living in the area, prior to the construction of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar Lake.

The lake is named after Mir Alam Bahadur (Syed Abdul Khasim), who was the then Prime Minister (1804 – 1808) of the province of Hyderabad during the rule of Mir Akbar Ali Khan Sikander Jah Asif Jah III, the third Nizam of Hyderabad state.

Mir Alam laid the foundation of the tank on July 20, 1804 as a memorial inscription which is still lying in one of its corners. It took almost two years in its completion, which dates to June 8, 1806.

Mir Alam was one of the individuals who led the Nizams forces in the battle against Tipu Sultan. This tank was built with the share of treasure he got from Srirangapatnam.

Water of this tank was said to be pure and that people used to call it as the `Gandipet ka pani in the later years. With time, this historically important tank has been neglected and today has been turned out to be an open drain and is chock-a-block with domestic sewage and industrial waste endangering the flora and fauna of the zoo.  Mr Safiullah ha aptly stated that, “It is a French marvel in a way, as the arched granite wall looks small but holds plenty of water”.

This lake is easily accessible through all the modes of transportation. The nearest airport is at Hyderabad, which is connected to almost all the major cities of the country. If you want to visit the place via railway network, then also you have the same city with the nearest station. There onwards, you can board a bus or can hire a taxi to reach the lake.
