Mehrangarh Fort

The largest fort in India, Mehrangarh Fort is situated in the city of Jodhpur, which happens to be in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The fort is erected 400 ft above the city and is enfolded by the daunting thick walls. In the premises of the fort, there are several palaces built, which are known for their intricate carvings and spacious courtyards.

The 15th century fort of Rajasthan was founded by Rao Jodha in the year 1459, on the advice of hermit. There are seven gates in the forts and on the second gate, one can still observe, the imprints of the cannonballs being attacked by the armies of Jaipur. One of the seven gates, there is a gates called as Jayapol and this gate was constructed by Maharaja Man Singh to celebrate his triumphs against the armies of Jaipur and Bikaner. The literal meaning of the name of the gate is victory. Then there is another gate that was built by Maharaja Ajit Singh called Fatehpol, which also literally defines as victory and this gate was built to personify the victory over Mughals. On this gate, one can see some palm imprints the evidence of the period, which still attract much attention.

To the left side of Mehrangarh Fort, there is the chhatri of Kirat Singh Soda, who was one of the soldiers and this place is the spot where he fell during the war, to defend the Mehrangarh Fort. There is also a museum inside the fort, which claims to be one of the well stocked museums in the state of Rajasthan. The museum has a great collection of relics of that period, which includes antique royal palanquins, along with the domed gilt Mahadol palanquin, which was won in the battle of 1730, over the governor of Gujarat.

The museum also preserves and displays the heritage of Rathores through arms, costumes, paintings and decorated period rooms. The fort has gained much of exposure through some of the popular films, which were hot here such as The Dark Knight Rises, Batman movie trilogy, directed by Christopher Nolan. The filming started here on 6th May 2011 only, here at Mehrangarh Fort.
