Nestled in the lap of Kerala, Mattancherry Palace lies 10 km away from the district of Ernakulum, Cochin. According to the legends, the palace was built by the Portuguese during the medieval times in 1555 A.D. and was presented to the Maharaja of Kochi, Veera Kerala Varma as a gift.
This Dutch Palace is a stockroom of ancient paintings and art forms. The palace has been honored in the reverence of Dutch in subsequent with the renovation and extension work in 1663 A.D., which undertook in the palace. The palace is considered as a stunning piece of art recalling the long lost old world charm. The Mattancherry palace has turned into an art gallery, displaying the Kerala’s artistic magnificence with some of its premium frescos and paintings that exhibiting the Hindu mythology.
The Mattancherry fort creeps out an architectural magnificence that has been produced in an oriental style. Constructed in a quadrangular structure, the palace displays Kerala’s traditional architectural style known as Nalukettu. The doorway directing towards the palace is marked with 2 arches and is built in an ancient Portuguese design. The palace has spacious rooms and halls all ornamented with striking murals, frescos and carvings rendering palace a warm shade in tempera technique, simultaneously decorating the entire space with panache.
The themes of the murals are based on some of the most famous Indian epics, Ramayana and Mahabharatha, along with other legends from Hindu mythology and some of the works of famous poets like Kalidas, especially those related to Lord Guruvayurappan.
