Maheshtala

The city of Maheshtala is a municipal corporation and falls under the police stations of Maheshtala, Thakurpukur, Metiaburuz and Behala, which lies in the Alipore sadar subdivision in the district of South 24 Parganas, forming a part of the north eastern Indian state of West Bengal.


The population of the city has been recorded in the census of 2001 which counts to 389,214. Out of the total population the male population constitutes 53% and the female population is 47%. The city of Maheshtala has an average literacy rate in the city which calculates to 69%, out of which the male literacy rate is 74% and the female literacy rate is 63%. The population under the six years of age calculates to 11%.


It is believed that the township in the area was developed by the combined efforts of a London-based company and a Bengali NRI. The combined efforts by both the parties started off with Maheshtala project as a joint venture with Maheshtala Municipality and acquired an area of about 85,900 sq km, in close proximity to Nungi Station. The town is also acknowledged as the birthplace of a renowned singer, music trainer and music composer, Shanti Rajan Samanta.

The city blessed with beauty experiences three types of climate such as the summers, winters and monsoons. Here summers are quite hot, especially during the day time as nights are cool and pleasant. Winters start here in the month of November till February which is quite cold, dropping the temperature of the city to 2 degree Celsius. Monsoons arrive in the month of June till September and bring heavy showers in the city.

Maheshtala by Air: Maheshtala has its international airport at the state capital, Kokata known as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport; it also has a domestic airport at Bagdogra, near Siliguri.


Maheshtala by Rail: Maheshtala has a well organized network of railway, which connects it to different parts of the country. At the state capital itself there are two major railheads such as Howrah railway station and Sealdah railway station.


Maheshtala by Road: The city has a well planned and extensive road network which links to the different parts within the state. The neighboring state like Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa can be reached via road. Some neighboring countries such as Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh can also be reached by road from the state of West Bengal.
