Mahant Ghasi Das Memorial Museum

Mahant Ghasi Das Memorial Museum

One of the leading museums in central India, Mahant Ghasi Das Memorial Museum is located near D.K. Hospital in the beautiful city of Raipur in Chhattisgarh. The museum was established by Raja Mahant Ghasidas in the year 1875. Inscriptions, weapons, ancient coins, kalachuri sculptures, carvings, Buddhist bronzes, and items like clothes and ornaments that were being used by the different tribes of Chhattisgarh are the priceless collection displayed at the museum. Various different types of objects of archaeology, anthropology, and natural history are preserved here. There is a lot to explore for you all in two floors and five galleries of the museum.

Mahant Ghasi das built the museum in a historical octagonal building inspired by British architectural style. The dome of the building is still more or less limited to the British crown style. Later in 1953, due to the scarcity of the space another museum building was constructed and was inaugurated by India’s first president Dr. Rajendra Prasad. There is also a huge library in the same building.

Mahant Ghasi Das Memorial Museum is one of the 10 oldest museums in India and is definitely a must visit place for all. The museum is open on all days from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. leaving Mondays and public Holidays. Entry fee for the museum is Rupee one per head only.
