Mahabalipuram Dance Festival, more commonly known as Mamallapuram Dance Festival is an internationally acclaimed and globally renowned event, which is held in the town of Mahabalipuram, which marks its beginning on the 25th of December and is carried further till the last week of the month of Jan or the first week of Feb.
This dance festival is annually organized by the Department of Tourism, Government of Tamil Nadu in the city of Mahabalipuram also known as Mamallapuram, the renowned and ancient 7th century centre for Pallava culture and arts.
This event show is conducted on every Saturday and Sunday and on gusted holidays, which starts from 25th December till the first week of February. The festival is celebrated with lot of grandeur and extravaganza. A lot of artists, including musicians and dancers from India and abroad assemble to roack the stage with their charisma and thrill the crowd.
The venue of this four week Mahabalipuram Dance Festival is Arjunas penance, a bass-relief sculpted on the face of two enormous adjacent rocks, in Mahabalipuram. The pedestal where these artist perform is in itself is an aesthetic one with magnificent Pallava’s incredible monolithic Rock Sculptures, rendering an imposing outlook.
The festival event is conducted in an open air auditorium and is an occasion to witness performances of the best folk dancers of the country. The stage is believed to have been created 13 centuries ago and is adjacent to the sea, in the quaint city of Mahabalipuram.
Some of the major dance performances that are performed here at the event are like Bharata Natyam,Kuchipudi, Kathak, Kathakali etc. Various other performances and programs that are held at the event are classical dances, music, tribal dances and puppet shows, which contribute in entertaining the mass gathering.
