Maha Kaleshwar Temple

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga of Ujjain stands among the twelve renowned Jyotirlingas in India. The temple is positioned on the side of the Rudra Sagar Lake.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered as the most sacred abode of Lord Shiva. The presiding deity, Lord Shiva in the Lingam form is considered as Swayambhu. The glory of the temple has been described in various puranas. Many Sanskrit poets, including Kalidasa has sung the praises of the temple in poignant ways.

The temple of Mahakaleshwar along with its shikhara soaring into the skies, a magnificent frontage under the sky, renders prehistoric reverence and grandeur. Mahaklala was considered as the distinctive presiding deity of Ujjain. Even today, the Mahakal has a great influence on the city and its people, even in the midst of the commercialized busy routine, which makes an unbreakable association with the culture and traditions of the past. The idol of Mahakaleshwar is known to be dakshinamurti, facing the South. Mahakal is considered to be ritually established and invested with mantra-shakti.

Here at the temple, you will also find the tantric tradition. Along with that the idol of Omkareshwar Shiva is sanctified in the hall and is placed above the Mahakala shrine. There are also the idols of Ganesh, Parvati and Karttikeya, which are placed in the west, north and east sides of the sanctum. There is also an idol of Nandi, which is placed in the southern side of the chamber. The idol of Nagchandreshwar, which is placed on the third storey is open for darshans, only on Nagpanchami.

On the occasion of Mahashivaratri, there is a huge fair, which is held near the temple and in order to give a tribute to the Lord Shiva, the prayers are held for over a night. The temple is positioned in a massive area and is flanked by the elevated walls and in the dark hours the pathways are lighted up with the brass lamps.

The other attraction in the area is a lake, which is celebrated for having five levels and out of which one is underground.
