Madikeri, initially known by a name Mercara, is the picturesque hill city in the state of Karnataka. This hill station is erected at an elevation of about 1525 m above the sea level. The scenic beauty and the natural splendor of the town had made it to earn the title of the Scotland of India.
The city was also known as the capital of Coorg, this retreat to the soul and heart has lots to offer with its misty hills, lush green forests, sprawled tea and coffee plantations; orange grove along with surging streets renders a magnificent view to the eyes and satiating them. The hill station is enveloped with the natural beauty making it a perfect tourist holiday destination and entice the visitors to come over and over again.
Madikeri is considered as the land of the Kodavas. Kodavas have distinctive dresses, the men wearing wraparound robes called the Kupya and the women with a distinctive style of wearing the sari. They have many distinctive practices such as carrying ceremonial knives, and martial war dances. The culture also includes communal gatherings where drink, dance and special meat dishes seasoned with Garcinia are central attractions. The tributaries of the River Kaveri run through the town.
The land is spotted with a group of red-roofed dwellings and a bustling bazaar, render the city a quaint look. The main attractions of the city of Madikeri are its festivals which are celebrated in grandiose which include Kailpodhu, Kaveri Sankramana, Puttari and Dasara. Karaga festival also starts during the time of Navaratri. Madikeri Dasara parade is basically a parade of mantapas.
Madikeri takes its visitors to the land full of fantasies. With its surging landscape which is all swathed in different shades of green, which make up with the dotted exquisite coffee plantations along with the misty atmosphere, making Madikeri a perfect picture of magnificence. Some of the popular attractions of Madikeri are the Abbey Falls, Rajah’s Seat, Omkareshwara Temple, Madikeri Fort. There are three wildlife sanctuaries that are well known in the city and these are Bahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary and Tala Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary and one National Park – the Nagarhole National Park, provide habitat and protection to the many varieties of animals, trees and herbs.
