Lake Palace was formerly known as Jag Niwas is positioned on the Jag Niwas Island and is sprawled over an area of about 4 acres. The beautiful Lake Palace is erected in the center of the Pichola Lake. The mansion is believed to have been constructed by Maharana Jagat Singh, in the year 1743. The palace was constructed with the purpose of being an imperial summer resort of the owner, which now has been converted into a five star hotel.


This Taj Lake Palace seems to be rising out of the Lake Pichola, evokes a sense of magic and mystic in the city of Udaipur. The palace is a floating fort which is created out of white marble, seems like a mosaic gleaming under the shade of moon. The palace also marks as the reminiscent of the most beautiful tourist cliché in the world, the Taj Mahal.


The palace is also believed to have been constructed and conceived in romance by Maharana Jagat Singh 2, who was the 62nd successor to the regal dynasty of Mewar. He was also believed to be as one of the descendants of the Sun God.


The place explores an excellent taste of craftsmanship with ethnic themes, which employ textiles and handicrafts, highlights the beauty of the palace. The palace is a perfect paradigm of the place nestling in the lap of nature. The rippling waters along with the murmuring of birds will take you to the other world. The place is an elegant fantasy and is a dream heaven.


The Taj Lake Place renders a beautiful natural view of the majestic Aravalli Hills, which happens to stand on one side of the lake and gives a historical view at the other end of the lake. The palace is also renowned for offering most of the royal facilities.


The courtyards in the palace are lined with columns, pillared terraces, fountains and gardens all add to its impressive image. The rooms are well ornamented with cusped arches, inland stones of pink and green lotus leaves and also have painted mirrors.


In the fort, there are apartments such as the Bada Mahal, Kush Mahal, Ajjan Niwas, Phool Mahal and Dhola Mahal. Among the facilities that are available in the palace are swimming pool, conference hall and a bar. The palace has been titled as “A real-life jewel in Lake Pichola”.
