The hill resort of Kurseong is a sub-divisional town, which is located in the district of Darjeeling, forming a part of the north eastern Indian state of West Bengal. This beautiful hill city is erected at an elevation of about 1,458 m and is just at a distance of 32 km from the ‘Queen of Hills’, Darjeeling. The local name of the hillcity of Kurseong is “Kharsang”, in Lepcha lingo which defines as the ‘Land of White Orchids’.


The history of the hill resort of Kurseong reveals that in 1835, it was surrendered to the British Empire by the chogyal (monarch) of Sikkim. Then in 1880, this petite hamlet emerged as a tourist destination for the colonial authorities. Later in 1880, the small hamlet became a tourist destination for the colonial authorities and became the place for sanatorium where the sick would recover. Kurseong is a paradise for the nature lovers and also offers exciting trekking paths.


The attractions of this hill resort other that its natural splendor are Eagles Crag, breathtaking Teesta River, Jannu and Kabru peaks and the sights of emerald green forests of Darjeeling valley and St. Mary Hill. Some of the religious attractions in the area are the temples of Ambotia Shiva Temple and Gidhapahar Mandir. Then the hill town has got quite a number of picnic spots such as Kettle Valley Picnic Spot, The Dow Hill etc., which stads as a perfect day out spot. The tea estates in the area are popular for its lush green plantations with long stretches in the fields. Some of them are Ambotia, Castleton, Springside, Makaibari, Jogmaya, Ghoomtee, which add charms and life to the ambience rendering the place a refreshing look.


The hill city of Kurseong is just at a distance of about 47 km from the city of Siliguri and is connected to the city by road and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. The nearest airport to the hill town is at Bagdogra and the nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri [NJP], which is just at a distance of about 53 km from the hill city of Kurseong.


The best times to visit Kurseong are between March end and May and between the end of August and October.
