Kurnool is regarded as the first capital of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh (1953 to 1956), till today forms a part of this southern state of the country. It is the district Head quarters of the Kurnool district.The city of Kurnool is nestled on the southern banks, which makes up as a convergence point of the rivers Handri and Tungabhadra and is located in the west-central part of the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is one of the four districts of Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh. Standing as the largest district among the four districts of Andhra Pradesh where others three are Kadapa, Anantapur and Chittore, the region has been under the authority of the Hindu King, Sri Krishnadevaraya.


The district of Kurnool shares its name with the headquarters of the mandal, the revenue division, the district and the city. It is believed that the name of the place Kurnool has been taken from Kandanavolu, a Telugu word that has been uncovered from the ancient inscriptions and in literature. The district has been under many rulers as in 1687, the last Mogul Emperor Aurungzeb In the year 1687, the last Mogul Emperor Aurungzeb took over their control upon the territory but later on it was conquered by the Nizams. After some time, the area was declared as an independent state. The city also stands as the birth land of many political personalities.

Kurnool which was famous in the Colonial era as Kandanole is a Corporation. Kurnool district boasts of having produced the only Telugu speaking PM of India. Late Mr PV Narasimha Rao who was the PM of India from 1991 – 1995 contested and won the parliament seat from Nandyal town of Kurnool district with the thumping majority of nearly two lakh votes. Kurnool also boasts of producing Late Sri Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy who was the Chief Minister of AP.


Kurnool Medical college one of the first of the Medical colleges set up in India is established Assembly buildings constructed when Kurnool was capital of the Andhra State.


Kurnool is near to some of the most religiously popular pilgrim centres in the whole of India. The city has some of the most revered religious places, architectural monuments which have added to its beauty and reverence. These include Srisailam Dam, Mallikarjuna Swami temple at Srisailam, Nagarjuna Sagar Tiger Reserve, Sri Yaganti Umamaheswara Swami temple, Raghavendra Swami temple, Rollapadu Bird Sanctuary, Yaganti Caves, Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swami temple, Shirdi Sai Baba temple, Konda Reddy Buruju, Nagareswarasawami, Peta Anjaneyaswami, Venugoplaswami, Iswaraswami, Saibaba and Birla Mandir or Satyanarayaswami.


The city also holds other attractions such as the Car festival of Kurnool, which takes place in the months of November and December, for the eight consecutive days from Margasira Suddha Triodasi. The very festival is dedicated to Sri Ajaneyaswami. The city also holds the relics of the forts that which dates back to the 15th century.

The city of Kurnool experiences variations in the climatic conditions all across the year. The city experiences hot summer with pleasant and moderate winters.
