Khecheopalri Lake

Khecheopalri Lake

The former name of the Khecheopalri Lake is Kha-Chot-Palri, which literary means, the heaven of Padmasambhava is a holy lake for both Buddhists and Hindus and is also believed that the lake fulfills the wishes.

The main highlight of this sacred lake is when it is looked upon from a height, the lake silhouettes forming an image as that of a footmark of Lord Shiva. The lake is situated in a close proximity to Pelling.

As per the legends, one of the most revered lakes in Sikkim, Khecheopalri Lake has its actual name as ‘Sho Dzo Sho’, which literally defines as ‘Oh Lady, Sit Here’. However, the lake is commonly known by a name Khecheopalri Lake, for the fact that it is situated on the holy Khecheopalri Hill.

The lake plays an important part of the much valued gorge, named “Demazong” which stands as the valley of rice. This backdrop of the place where the lake is placed is commonly known as a land of hidden treasures blessed by Guru Padmasambhava.

A Bizzarre yet interesting feature of the lake is that the fallen leaves from the trees are not allowed to float on the waters of the lake as is it ensured by the birds present around the lake. As any leaf of the tree drops into the lake, soon it is picked up by the birds.

The Khecheopalri Lake along with the Khangchendzonga National Park has been conserved in the form of the biodiversity perspective with ecotourism and as pilgrimage site. The best time to visit this lake is in the month of February and March, for the reason that during these months many festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm.

The lake is easy to reach as it is located near the Khecheopalri Village, which is just at a distance of about 147 km from the western side of Gangok and just 34 km from the northwestern side of Pelling, lying in the West Sikkim District of the Indian state of Sikkim.
