Khangchendzonga National Park, formerly known as Kanchenjunga National Park is also considered as the Kanchenjunga Biosphere Reserve. Established in 1977, the park is National Park as well as Biosphere reserve, forming a part of the north eastern state of India, Sikkim.


Sprawled over an area of 849.5 sq km got its name from the third highest peak in the world known as the Khangchendzonga, which straddles on the western side of the park. The park retains various glaciers such as Zemu Glacier, Simyo Glacier and many more. Some of the peaks that arefound in the region are Pandim, Narshing, Siniolchu, etc.


The Park also renders a spectacular and outstanding vista of the unique Indian Wildlife, which is rare to find is present here. The virgin beauty of the park is flanked by various peaks and glaciers on its three sides, leaving the western side as here stands the third highest peak of the world.


Other names in the record list of fauna that have been seen in the park are Himalayan black bear, red panda, Tibetan wild ass, Himalayan blue sheep, serow, musk deer, snow leopard, Himalayan Tahr, wild dog, sloth bear, civet, goral and takin, as well as reptiles including rat snake and Russells viper.


The avian-fauna here in the park includes Green Pigeon, Tibetan Snowcock, Snow Pigeon, Impeyan Pheasant, blood Pheasant, Sunbird, Eagle, Satyr Tragopan, Osprey, Himalayan Griffon, Lammergeier, Tragopan Pheasant, Asian Emerald Cuckoo and more.


The flora which can be found here includes maple, willow, alpine grasses, oaks, fir, birch and shrubs of medicinal values. Apart from its wildlife, the park also gives opportunity for trekking and mountaineering as is nestled in the midst of various peaks and glaciers.


The best time to travel the place is in the months from March – May and September – November.


The nearest airfield to the park is Bagdogra Airport of West Bengal, which is just at a distance of 222km from the park. The nearest railhead is New Jalpaiguri, Siliguri Junction of West Bengal which is around 221 km away. The highway that connects the park in its nearest location is NH 31 A.
