Kanha National Park is also a Tiger Reserve and happens to be in the district of Mandla and Balaghat in the Indian central state of Madhya Pradesh. In the year 1930, the region of Kanha was divided into two sanctuaries, Hallon and Banjar, covering area of about 250 sq km and 300 sq km respectively.


The very Kanha National Park was created and established on 1 June, 1955. The national park is spread over an area of about 940 sq km and is surrounded by the buffer zone, which ranges to about 1,067 sq km and the neighboring sanctuary, Phen Sanctuary is around 110 sq km forms Kanha Tiger Reserve. It also stands as the largest national park in the central part of India.


The flora chiefly is comprised of Southern tropical Moist Mixed Deciduous Forest and Southern Tropical dry Deciduous Mixed Forest. The park is thickly covered with Bija, Haldu, Dhaora trees which stand along the long stretches of Ban-rahar, Bamboo and Sindhur tress. The three rivers namely Sulkum, Banjar and Nila irrigate the topography of this park.


Kanha Bnational Park is home to 22 species of large mammals. The major wildlife species that are found in Kanha Wildlife Sanctuary are Royal Bengal Tigers, Leopards, Dholes (Indian wild dog), Indian Bisons, Sambar, Chital, Barasingha, Barking Deer, Black Buck, Chausingha, Nilgai, Monkeys, Mongoose, Mouse Deer, Sloth Bear, Jackal, Porcupine, Hyena, Jungle Cat, Hare, Rock Pythons among many others.


There are over 300 species of birds in the park. The most common among them are Pea fowls, Storks, Pond Herons, Egrets, Indian Peafowl, Partridges, spotted Parakeets, Green Pigeons, Cuckoos, Drongos, Warblers, Kingfishers, Woodpeckers and fly catchers.


The ideal time to visit the park is from February to June. The park remains closed from 1st July to 31st October. The visiting timings of the park are:
November- February 5:30 AM to 11 AM and 3 PM to 6 PM
16 February-30 April 5:30 AM to 11 AM and 4 PM to 6 PM
1 May-30 June 5:30 AM to 10 AM and 3 PM to 6 PM
The nearest Airport to Kanha National Park is Nagpur, which is situated at a distance of about 265 km from the park and the nearest railheads are at Jabalpur and Bilaspur. Further taxis are available as to reach out to the national park.
