Footing at an altitude of 2600 m above sea level, Kamru fort is at a distance of 2 kms a beautiful valley called Sangla. The tower-like fort is set in a picturesque place and can be entered through a series of gates. At the main entrance, there is a striking statue of Lord Gautama Buddha, greeting the visitors. The fort appears like sitting over a packing of dressed stone that acts like a pedestal for this glorious piece of art. There is a beautiful wooden balcony, at the pinnacle of the fort and there the idol of Kamakhya Devi (Kamakshi Devi), is mounted, measuring it to be third floor of the fort, is really worth-watching.
It is believed that the idol is brought from Guwahati. Then also, there is Badrinath Temple in the Kamru fort itself, which traces its origin from the 15th century. Serving as the location for hosting a fair in the town, which is held once in three years, in order to honor the deity. There is also a parade, held in the fair with which the statue of the deity is taken to Gangotri, the origin of River Ganges. There are a number of interesting legends attached to the fort.
The location of the fort, the Sangla valley is itself a breathtaking beauty, with a blaze of saffron trees and cold snowmelt. Here, the river Bapsa gushes to meet the churning stream of the Sutlej River at Karcham. The nature boasts off its existence, showcasing its different colors. Along with it, there is a view of rising snow-clad mountains, lush green woods of deodar trees and opulently fruited orchards.
