Just over a hundred and fifty miles from the coast of Cochin in mainland India, there lies a tiny island called Kalpeni, which is stretched over an extent of 2.8 sq km. The island is aligned with both north and south and is popular for its beautiful 2.8 kilometer wide lagoon. Kalpeni is a settled island that is happened to be placed in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, India.


As Arab writers have stated that, “Kalpeni Islands, Koefaini is a group of three small islands and is considered as one of the most exquisite and impressing islands of Lakshadweep.” The island is 71 km towards the south of Androth and 201 km towards the NNE of Minicoy, with the broad Nine Degree Channel connecting them. The eastern and southern shorelines of the island are all accumulated with coral debris, which was the result of a violent storm that hit the area in 1847.


Kalpeni is also known for its three satellite islands which are named as Tilakkam, Pitti, and Cheriyam. The isle is measured 2.8 Km in length and 1.2 Km in breadth, having Cheriyam Island on its north, Tilakkam and Pitti on its south western side. Kalpeni holds one of the largest lagoons in Lakshadweep archipelago. It is a shallow isle, offering splendid opportunities for water sports and activities. Kalpeni atoll possesses a great storm bank of corals. This is the result of the devastating storm of 1847 that threw up huge rocks and due which; Kalpeni marks the distinction of not being a beach. It is believed that the storm of 1847 reshaped the Kalpeni Island. Since ages, Kalpeni has been an important island of Lakshadweep. Kalpeni is also popular for Tip Beach, which is situated on the northern tip of the island.


The place has an unexplored Moinnuddeen Mosque which lies on the southernmost shore of Kalpeni. The mosque is named after a famous Lakshadweep saint. Kalpeni stands as the first island in the very Union Territory where women were allowed to go to school and get an education.


The Island is encircled by a lagoon of fantastic splendor, with a rich coral life. Kalpeni is famous for many water sport activities and interesting sports like snorkeling, reef walking and canoeing, kayaking and sailing yachts.
