The coastal lake is situated in the district of Viluppuram of the state of Tamil Nadu; Kaliveli Lake forms one of the tourist attractions in the southern part of the country. This lake is situated at about a drive of 16 km north from Pondicherry and 10 km towards north from Auroville. The lake is found near the Bay of Bengal.


Kaliveli Lake is a recurrent marshland, with an undulation from freshwater to salty water. The lake also stands as a base for feeding and breeding of the migratory bird flyway. Kaliveli Lake in Tamil Nadu is also among the largest marshlands in peninsular India. Not only this, the lake is also deemed to be the marshland of both domestic and global value by the IUCN.


The lake also holds the remains of Allamparwa Fort which is situated on the shore that is in close proximity to the north channel of the Kaliveli Lake. It is just 35 km towards the north in the northeast side of Pondicherry. The best time to visit Villupuram is between the months of October to March.


There are other important places to visit in the nearby surroundings such as fortification walls, Venugopala Swami temple, Kalyana Mahal, ponds, Ranganatha temple, Kamalakkanni Amman temple, Thumpoor and Esalam. There is an interesting point on the lake that offers a paradisiacal view.
