Janmashtami stands for the birth of the Hindu God Lord Krishna and is elaborately called as Krishna Janmashtami. This revered festival of the Hindu mythology is also addressed with different names such as Krishnashtami, Saatam Aatham, Gokulashtami, Ashtami Rohini, Srikrishna Jayanti, Sree Jayanti and is often called as Janmashtami. The day is celebrated annually as the birth of Lord Krishna, who is believed to be the eighth avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu.


The festivity is held on the eighth day (Ashtami) in the dark hours of the fortnight, in the month of Shravana, which falls in August to September, as per the Hindu calendar. On the festival day, various events are held which includes the enactment of the scenes from the life of Lord Krishna, as described in the Holy Scriptures. Of them, the most famous and admired one is the Rasa lila, which is enacted on this revered occasion, along with that there are some scenes of the life of Lord Krishna in Mathura and Vrindavan.


This joyful celebrated is rejoiced and commemorated with great pomp and show with the late night events, as according to the Hindu Mythology, Lord Krishna was born at night at around 12 o’clock. This religious festival attracts people from all genres and binds them with the late night events. The striking feature i9s the enactment of the life scenes of Lord Krishna, which are held in different places in different styles such as these are done in temples and other religious institutions as well as parades and processions.


Another interesting feature of the event which happens on the festival is the Dahi Handi event, representin g the youthful days of God. This traditional and time honored festival is celebrated all across India and abroad with different names as in one of the southern state of India, Tamil Nadu, the festival is recognized as Uriadi. The festival is celebrated with fasting, bhajans, pujas and many other rituals. The festivity is a kind of meditation which renders an extremely rewarding devotional experience.
