Janjira is a huge fort located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. The fort was built in 16th century and is surrounded by the beautiful Arabian Sea from its all sides. Janjira Fort is one of the most impressive structures that lies in the small town of Murud in Maharashtra. The Fort was built by Malik Ambar, who was an Abssinian minister in the court of the Sultan of Ahmednagar in 17th century. There were 500 canons in the fort but only a few of them still exist. The fort reflects the brilliance engineering of the ancient manufacturers. Initially the fort was built in wooden structure but due to the continuous attracts by the Marathas and the English, the fort was reconstructed and acquired its original shape.


Today, the Janjira fort still remains the same glory as before and is largely visited by large number of tourists. The fort is further surrounded by coconut and betel nut trees that add on more charm to its amazing grandeur. Moving within the Fort, you will get to explore the amazing splendor and attractive architecture of the Fort. Water tanks, stone carving, tombs, guns, the gateways are some of the major things that you will get to see at the Fort. The fort is open for public on all the days from 7am to 6pm except on Fridays.
