Jalandhar is a city as well as district of the state of Punjab. It is one of the oldest provinces and had been ruled by many dynasties. The city has the maximum percentage of non-resident Indians. Jalandhar is also considered as the commercial capital of India and the chief producer of leather goods, pouches and sports equipments. Until 1953, Jalandhar was the capital of Punjab.


The literal meaning of Jalandhar when split is, ‘Jal’ meaning water and ‘Andhar’ meaning inside, forming inside the water and the phrase aptly suits the region, as it is located in the middle of the two great rivers of Punjab; Beas and Sutlej. In compliance with the legends, the city was christened after Lord Shiva slaughtered the demon king named ‘Jalandhar’. The city has lot to explore and offers a refreshing and relaxing holiday. As you enter the city, there are many places to visit, making it a historical legend as it has ancient religious places, telling the tales about its origin and upholding. These include Shiv Mandir, Tulsi Mandir, Devi Talab Mandir, St Mary’s Cathedral, Imam Nasar Masjid, Nawab Lodhi, Pushpa Gujral Science City, Gurdwara Chevin Padshahi, Wonderland Theme Park and also the Bhagat Singh Museum. Another temple, located in the heart of the city known as Devi Talab is an ancient temple. There is a famous Gurudwara is located at Kartarpur, which is around 400 years old.


There are other tourist attractions in Jalandhar as it hosts various events like annual events like fair held annually during the mid of September marking the death anniversary of Baba Sodal, Harballabh Sangeet Mela and of course, celebration of Baisakhi is famous for its grandeur.


Climate of Jalandhar
Jalandhar possesses a subtropical climate having hot summers, which commences from the month of April and lasts till June with extremely cold winters. The best time to visit the city is the months of October to March.

Jalandhar by Air: The nearest airport is Rajasansi Airport in Amritsar, plying both domestic as well as international flights, just at a distance of about 90kms.


Jalandhar by Rail: Jalandhar has its own railway station, connecting to the various parts of the nation. Some of the trains running through Jalandhar are Amritsar-New Delhi Shatabdi Express, Amritsar Howrah Mail, Amritsar-New Delhi Express, Amritsar-Bilaspur Chhatisgarh Express, Pathankot Tatanagar Express, JammuTawi-Pune Jhelum Express, Akal Takht Express, etc. There are other local trains that run from Jalandhar to Amritsar, Ludhiana, Hosiarpur, Pathankot, Ferozpur and Nokadar Junction.


Jalandhar by Road: The roads of Jalandhar are, well developed and well connected. There is an extensive network of buses, connecting to the other chief cities.
