Situated in Fort Kochi in Kerala, Indo-Portuguese Museum offers the artifact that shows the influence of Portuguese on art and architecture of the region. The museum is one of the best places for understanding the Indo-Portuguese Christian Art heritage. Established in 1910 by the efforts of Late Dr. Joseph Kureethra, the museum features an Altar Display Hall, which exhibits the Portuguese influences on Fort Kochi and the surrounding areas. The five main attractions at the museum include Altar, Treasure, Procession, Civil Life and Cathedral. Altar made in teak is one of the major attractions at the museum. A chasuble from Bishop’s House and processional cross from Santa Cruz Cathedral are other important things from history displayed at the museum. The impressive collection of artifacts at the Indo-Portuguese museum also includes the artwork donated by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
The museum is well known for its beautiful architecture and the artifacts that are made under the Portugal influence and is featured with Vypeen, a chasuble (19th century) from Bishop’s House, Fort Kochi, Processional cross, which is a combination of silver and wood (17th century) from Santa Cruz Cathedral, Fort Kochi, Indo-Portuguese Monstrance (18-19th century), from The Church of Our Lady of Hope, Vypeen. The Museum remains open on all the days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. except on Mondays and on public holidays. Also, the entry to Indo-Portuguese Museum remains free on very first Thursday of the month.
