Vipassana is one of Indias most ancient meditation techniques and can be traced its origins from the times of Gautama Buddha. It is the process of self-purification by self-observation. The International Centre for Vipassana meditation called Dhammagiri is apparently the largest Vipassana Center and is located here.
Most of the forts were built in built in Satavahana dynasty. The place is a real treat for the trekkers and hikers in Igatpuri and has also gained its importance by making its mark in the Bollywood industry as the place is commonly seen in the movies that are shot here.

The region is all surrounded with the majestic mountains which can be accessed by trains moving from Mumbai CST to Kasara and Igatpuri. Local trains will only take you to Kasara. To reach Igatpuri, one has to either take a long distance train or reach Kasara by a suburban train and then further board a bus to uphill.
