Id-ul-Zuha or Bakr-id

Eid-ul-Zuha, also called as Eid-ul-Adha and Bakra-Id or Bakrid is the famous Muslim festival celebrated in the India and many other countries. As the name Bakr-id suggests there is a tradition of sacrificing ‘Bakr’ on the day. The word Id is derived from the Arabic word iwd meaning Festival and the word Zuha comes from uzhaiyya which means Sacrifice.


Muslims celebrate the day through sacrificing goat for the sacrifice of prophet Ibrahim who sacrificed his son when asked by god. Muslims also offers prayers in the mosque on the day. The festival comes elongated withthe Haj pilgrimage in Mecca where sacrificed meat is served amongst friends and family on the festival day. Various other delicious recipes are made and distributed amongst people at the mosque.


The day is celebrated with great enthusiasm with friends and family in Muslims. On the festive day, all men and women dress in their best outfits and visits Mosque. People recite ‘Dua’ or make prayers and sacrifice. The wealthy families sacrifice one animal per family and then distribute two-thirds of the meat among poor.A full-grown camel, cow, goat or sheep free from disease can be offered to god on the day.


Muslims greet each other “Eid Mubarak”. Some also visit the houses of their friends and relatives to celebrate the festival. Others celebrate it with everyone at mosque. People also exchanged gifts amongst themselves to make the day memorable for each other.
