Holi, the festival of colors is a religious festival fondly celebrated in India. The festival basically belongs to Hindus and also is observed in Nepal. The festival happens to fall on the last full moon day of the month of Falgun as per the Hindu calendar and according to the Georgian calendar, the festival falls in the month of March.
According to the Hindu Mythology, the festival is celebrated the slaughter of Holika, the sister of Hrinyakashyap, who sat on fire with his nephew Prahalad in order to burn him to death. But the child had his destiny of his own he was saved and the wicked women was burnt to death. Thus, Holika Dahan is celebrated a day before Holi.
The festival also celebrates the conclusion of the grey winter season and welcomes the arrival of the spring season. Not only in India, the festival is celebrated in different countries across the globe and is also known as Phagwah ir Doljatra.
The festival also celebrates the eternal love of Radha for Lord Krishna. Then, there is another legendary story which is associated to the festival that Lord Shiva killed Kamadeva and later resurrected him for the sake of his wife Rati, thus the festival celebrates the event of bringing back Kamadeva only as a mental image.
In Mathura, the festival is celebrated in a grand way which lasts for 16 days and is played in different styles including with flowers, colors, water, mud etc.
