Hemis Festival is one of the popular festivals celebrated in the courtyard of Hemis Gompa-the biggest Buddhist monastery in Ladakh state of India. The day is celebrated the birth anniversary of birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava, the person who founded Tantric Buddhism in Tibet.
People in Ladakh celebrate the festival with great zeal and enthusiasm. The fair was marked by the fabulous Masked Dance, performed by the lamas and is the illustration of good dominating over the evil. The performers in the mask dance used to wear bring colored costumes and amazingly painted masks. Mask plays an important part in the dance. The dance remains slow with fantastic expressions. The music goes along with correct sounds of cymbals, drums, and unwieldy trumpets. There is a head lama who preside the complete festival.
The fair in every 12 year is turned and a two-storey high Thanka is displayed depicting Padmasambhava. The Thanka, is vaery famous in Ladakh region. It is beautiful equipped with pearls and semi-precious stones and looks amazingly beautiful. Another major highlight of the festival is the local handicrafts that are very popular amongst the visitor. There are various other things that one can buy from the Hemis Fair.
